 International Scholar Arrival Checklist

Welcome to the campus of the University of California, Davis. This checklist has been prepared to assist you during your first few days here.

1. Do you have a place to stay tonight? If not, refer to the list of motels and bed-and-breakfast establishments.

2.

Have you officially checked in with SISS, presented your passport and immigration documents, filled out a Personal Data Sheet, and reserved a place at an Orientation Session?

3.

It is important to immediately open a checking account at a local bank to pay for initial local expenses.

4.

Do you have a Social Security card and number? This is necessary if you will be earning money in the U.S. and is required to obtain a California driver's license or California identification (ID) card. You may obtain application forms and more information at SISS You must present your passport and immigration documents to demonstrate your legal status when you apply at the Social Security Office.

5.

If you have not finalized your housing arrangements, go our housing website.

6.

It is absolutely essential that you and your family members have health insurance throughout your stay in the U.S. Medical care in the U.S. is extremely expensive. If you are employed by UCD, ask your department if UCD will provide health insurance coverage. If not, ask for information on insurance at SISS.

7.

Have you met with your faculty sponsor and/or staff contact person in your host department? If not, please do so immediately.

8.

Are you accompanied by school-aged children? Contact the Davis School District Office, 526 B Street, (530) 757-5300, and you will be referred to the appropriate school. You must present proof of birth date (birth or baptismal certificate) and immunization records at the school to enroll your children. Davis schools start the first week in September and are in session until mid-June with summer vacation from mid-June through August.

9.

Do you have a UCD identification (ID) card? You will need this card to use the University library, and for other privileges. Your hosting department will arrange for you to obtain your ID card.

10.

Do you or your family members need assistance in learning English? Information about various opportunities to improve your English skills is available at SISS.
