J-1 Professors and
Researchers The J-1 regulations provide for a maximum stay of three years for teaching and research although in some special situations this may be extended. Extensions may be granted only to allow completion of original objectives and not to begin a new project. Services for International Students and Scholars (SISS) can authorize an exceptional extension up to six months beyond the three years. Application Procedures: Application for a six-month extension is made to SISS by submitting the completed Request for Extension of Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status form along with a memo from the host professor. This memo should outline the research project and detail specifically why an exceptional six months beyond the normal three years is necessary to complete the specific project or research activity. A six-month extension should be requested only if no further extensions will be needed. |
