SISS Homepage for International Students Where is my I-20? I-20/DS-2019 Information for New Students
Most international students coming to Davis will require an F-1 student visa. Some students will be eligible for a J-1 student visa. To be eligible for the J-1 student visa a substantial portion of your financial support must be from a scholarship, fellowship or assistantship from an external funding source, for example, your home government or a corporate sponsor. Students with only personal or family funding are NOT eligible for J-1 status.
SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) is an internet-based system that allows universities and the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)--a part of the former Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS)--to exchange information on the visa status of international students. US consulates and embassies, as well as other US government agencies will have access to this information. The Department of State is now providing consular post processing times on-line to assist visa applicants plan for visa processing delays abroad. The Department of State website provides visa applicants with an average wait time to obtain a visa interview (which is now required for all H, O, J, F applicants) and the average wait time for a nonimmigrant visa to be processed at individual consular posts. These are estimates only and government processing times are always subject to change. Planning ahead and applying as early as possible is always recommended. In addition to checking processing times, all visa applicants should thoroughly review the visa instructions and procedures at the specific post where he or she will be applying. ***AS ALWAYS, WE RECOMMEND THAT STUDENTS CONTACT SISS PRIOR TO ANY INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL.***
Optional Practical Training Online Workshop Please be sure to read the Updates on OPT 29-Month Interim Final Rule Curricular Practical Training Online Workshop .To apply for OPT or CPT, please view the workshop carefully. After viewing the workshop, please schedule an appointment with your advisor by calling (530) 752-0864. Students in J-1 status, should schedule an interview with your advisor to find out more about work authorization available to your status. Please call (530) 752-0864 to schedule an appointment with your international student advisor or sign up for the employment workshop. Travel Delays: Students traveling outside of the U.S. should be aware of possible delays in reentering the United States. National security concerns have occasionally led to long delays in returning to the U.S. for some students doing research in sensitive areas. U.S. government regulations require that students notify SISS of any change of address within 10 days. This should be done through SISWEB. In addition, students subject to Special Registration have the responsibility to directly file the AR-11SR form with immigration authorities within 10 days.
If you are a new student planning to come to Davis it may
be helpful to contact other students already familiar with the campus and
community. Some of these organizations may be helpful in
making these connections prior to your arrival.
