UC Davis academic departments who wish to host a visiting undergraduate student primarily to do research should consider using the J-1 Non-Degree Student category. This requires that there be clear academic objectives and an evaluation of these objectives. Visiting graduate students can be hosted by using the appropriate J-1 scholar category.
To qualify as an undergraduate researcher a minimum of 50% of the funding for the visit must come from either the department, or an outside entity (such as the home government, CONACYT, DAAD, etc.), or a combination of both, the visitor may qualify as a J-1 undergraduate student researcher (non-degree student). A student's personal or family funding must constitute less than half of the total funding.
To request a DS-2019 form for an individual who will apply for a J-1 non-degree student visa, please click on the following link and download “Request for DS-2019 – Undergraduate Student Researcher". The hosting department (not the student) should complete the form and submit it to SISS at least 2 months prior to the planned arrival date of the visiting student.
The hosting department may request an extension of program for undergraduate student researchers as long as the total stay is not more than 24 months. Please click on the following link and download “Request for DS-2019 Extension– Undergraduate Student Researcher".
Department contacts should instruct these students to check-in at SISS when they arrive in Davis, and read the Online Orientation.
