Telephone Service

For convenience and privacy, most students and scholars will want to install their own private telephone. You may purchase your own telephone set from a number of hardware, discount, electronic, or other retail stores.

Telephone service at your home or apartment:

To arrange for telephone service in Davis, call SBC California at 1-800-310-2355.  (Customer service is also available in the following languages other than English: Cantonese 800-281-2288; Mandarin 888-333-2828; Tagalog 800-956-8084; Spanish 800-870-5855; Japanese 800-573-7573; Korean 800-300-6657; Vietnamese 800-300-5315).

They will assist you in making the choices about which services you will need. Before you order telephone service, it would be helpful to read the pages of the Yolo County Telephone Directory which list services available to telephone customers and the information you will have to provide when you order your new service. The phone directory can be found at public pay phones, the UC Davis Shields Library Reference section, and in most private residences.

Telephone directories or telephone books:

These books are given free to every customer when the phone service begins and are replaced annually free of charge. If you do not want your telephone number listed in the directory, you will be charged extra. Consult your telephone directory for complete instructions about dialing telephone numbers which are local (no charge), long-distance within your area code (area codes are three-digit numbers), long-distance outside of your area code, and international calls.

Long distance service:

When you select your long-distance service, check carefully to make certain that the long-distance service company you select allows you to make international calls.

Credit for poor or disconnected service or reaching the wrong number is obtained by dialing a zero for an operator and reporting the difficulty and your telephone number.

Emergency numbers:

"911" is used for emergency situations in most areas. By dialing (or pushing the buttons on your telephone) 9-1-1, the caller can report a police, fire, and/or medical emergency. The operator will assist the caller in getting the appropriate help.

To place a call on campus to another location within this campus, dial the last 5 numbers of the phone number. (Example: Services for International Students and Scholars' telephone number is 752-0864. When dialing on campus, it is only necessary to dial 2-0864.) To dial a residence hall (dormitory) number dial 4 + 4-digit number. To dial an off-campus number, dial 9 + 7-digit number.
