International Cafe

SISS hosts two or more International Cafés each quarter. International Cafés are an excellent opportunity to meet and interact with international and domestic students and scholars! Help yourself to free light beverages and snacks and participate in the themed craft or activity. Join us at our future International Cafes! In collaboration with our campus partners, keep an eye out for our specially-themed International Cafes.

Global Ambassador Mentorship Program

The Global Ambassador Mentorship Program is designed to help new freshmen and transfer international students adjust and thrive on the UC Davis campus. The students who run the program, the Global Ambassadors, act as mentors and, most importantly as friends to help new international students excel in their new lives as UC Davis students. Participants will be able to share their culture and values with their mentor and receive support from them.

EDU 065: Foundations for University Success for International Students

This is a 2-unit course in which international students may register each quarter of their first year at UC Davis. This course is offered by the School of Education and co-sponsored by Services for International Students and Scholars (SISS). It provides new international students with the tools to succeed in their first year at UC Davis. Students study and discuss the issues that challenge all of us and explore their interests, both academically and personally.

Global Engagement Mondays (GEM)

Global Engagement Mondays (GEM) are an opportunity for American and international students and scholars to share and learn about common topics of interest to all from different cultural perspectives. GEM offers the chance for students and scholars to share their experiences with American culture, as newcomers or lifelong residents, and learn from each other’s stories and insight. We welcome all students, scholars, and international spouses or partners to join and are always open to new topic ideas!

Graduate Student Programs

First Friends Program

The First Friends Program is designed to help international, domestic, and undocumented graduate students integrate into the UC Davis campus community. The students who run the program, “the first frienders”, act as mentors and most importantly as friends to help new students excel in their transition process to UC Davis. Program Participants are also invited to participate in a variety of social events on campus. This program is open to all graduate and professional students at UC Davis.

Particpate in our seminar series, an opportunity to meet and learn about some of the global leaders in UC Davis. Seminar guests will share their professional journey and career development, highlighting what it means to be a global leader and how to be successful in an ever increasing international workplace. Scholar Programs

Scholar Coffee Break

Come visit the International Center in the morning as you make your way onto campus to enjoy complimentary coffee and donuts. Say hello to many scholars from all around the campus and the world. Scholar Coffee Break is a monthly morning social and is held right before the upcoming New J Scholar Orientation. All international scholars, both newly arrived and settled, are invited to this event! Don't forget to remind your scholar peers in your department. There is no cost to attend.

Spouses, Partners, and Dependents Support

Connections at International House Davis has been greeting newcomers to the Davis area for more than five decades. Internationals and Americans meet weekly on Wednesday mornings at I-House from 10:00 – 11:30am to socialize. Based on simple kindness and an interest in making friends from all over the world, International House members host an open-house with coffee/tea and baked goodies. There is also a craft table and a children’s play area. New arrivals are greeted by friendly faces who can make adjusting to a new environment a pleasant adventure. You may even meet someone from your home country! All ages are welcome, and there is no fee to join and no need to call ahead to attend.

International Graduation Celebration

International Graduation Celebrationis a celebratory event to acknowledge the accomplishments of UC Davis international students and of the faculty and staff that support them in achieving their goals.

The reception includes refreshments, an awards ceremony, and a program of entertainment reflecting the diverse cultural backgrounds of UC Davis international students. UC Davis international students with their family and friends and UC Davis faculty and staff are invited to attend.
