Scholars & Departments

SISS serves approximately 2,600 UC Davis international scholars from nearly 100 countries.  The scholar community includes short-term visiting scholars and postdoctoral scholars, as well as full-time career researchers and faculty. Bringing international visitors to the UC Davis campus represents the first step in the successful integration of an H-1B worker, J-1 Exchange Visitor, or other international visitor within our community. The following information is intended to help departmental facilitators obtain a general overview of the typical visa classifications that one encounters in an academic setting.

Important factors to keep in mind are:

  1. The purpose behind each visa classification;
  2. The term length associated with each classification;
  3. The associated funding requirements (source and amount);
  4. The UC Davis internal policies regarding which visa classifications are eligible to support which UC Davis job title; and
  5. The payment source and method requirements established by UC Davis for various job titles.

SISS also works closely with International House to address the needs of international scholars and their families while they are at UC Davis.
