Volunteer Opportunities

There are many opportunities year round to volunteer with SISS.  Most of the volunteer needs are in the 2-3 week period before Fall quarter starts as all the newly admitted international undergraduates, transfer students, exchange, and graduate students arrive on campus and need to complete a mandatory SISS Orientation.

Who Can Volunteer?

  • Volunteer opportunities are first open to UC Davis students, staff, faculty, and their families.
  • Community members are also welcome to volunteer on some programs, like the International Friendship Program, though all volunteers should be of college age or older and must complete required trainings.

Why Volunteer?

Many of our volunteers love meeting and making new friends through their volunteer work, both with those they are helping and with other volunteers. Volunteers also tend to have a lot of fun while they are helping out!

Many volunteers have shared that they have made lasting friendships through volunteering at orientations and at Global Engagement Mondays.

What Is the Commitment for Volunteering?

During Fall Orientation:

  1. All volunteers must attend a mandatory 3 hour training session which will cover immigration-related training, FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), an introduction to the Principles of Community and inter-cultural training.  Returning volunteers will have a shortened refresher training requirement.
  2. Volunteers are expected to work at least 2 shifts during the 2-3 week period before Fall quarter starts.  Shifts average 3-4 hours.
  3. We expect that including training, all volunteers will volunteer at least 10 hours of their time.

At Global Engagement Mondays:

  1. All volunteers, called Discussion Facilitiators, must attend a mandatory 2 hour training session which will cover an introduction to the Principles of Community and inter-cultural training.  Returning volunteers will have a shortened refresher training requirement.
  2. Volunteers are asked to attend at least 60% of the discussions throughout the quarter, about 10 hours of their time in total.
  3. Discussion Facilitators will not only make many new firends, but will also receive a certificate of acknowledgement upon completion.

What Are the Expectations for Volunteers?

During Fall Orientation:

  1. Volunteers are expected to wear their SISS t-shirt and name tag while volunteering (and to NOT wear their shirt when volunteering with other organizations).
  2. Volunteers are expected to show up on time.
  3. Volunteers are expected to notify the appropriate staff if they will be late or cannot make their shift due to an emergency.
  4. Volunteers are expected to treat each other and those they help with openness and respect.
