Employment for F-1 Students

Students who enter the U.S. in F-1 status can access certain employment benefits. Students remain in F-1 status and are approved for certain employment benefits as they become eligible.

Overview of available employment options:

  • On Campus Employment: Students in F-1 status may work on-campus up to 20 hours per week during the academic year, and full-time during school vacation periods.
  • Curricular Practical Training (CPT): CPT authorization permits you to take a job that is directly related to your field of studies and commensurate with your educational level.
  • Optional Practical Training (OPT): OPT gives an F-1 student the opportunity to apply what they have learned in a degree program through off-campus employment after completion of all degree requirements.
  • Optional Practical Training STEM Extension (STEM OPT): Students who are currently on OPT can extend their work authorization an additional 24-months total if they meet certain criteria.

Would you like to gain some work experience directly related to your major in the U.S.?  Will you be completing your academic program within the next two quarters? Consider applying for OPT.
