Setting up Utilities and Services for Off-Campus Housing
Tenants are typically asked to pay for internet and power in addition to their rent. Depending on the type of housing or your rental agreement, you may also be required to pay for services such as water and trash. You must contact the utility provider to set up your own services, ensuring they are active and billed to your name when you take possession of your rental. You can often use the start date of your rental agreement as the start date of your services.
If you are living with roommates, be sure to communicate in advance so everyone agrees on who is responsible for setting up which utility services.
Electricity and Gas
Not all homes come with natural gas for appliances like the stove or dryer, but all are equipped for electricity. Be sure you know your residence's power source before you set up services.
- Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) provides both natural gas and electricity to the City of Davis, and natural gas services to the City of Sacramento.
- Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) provides electricity in Sacramento.
Internet
There are several internet providers in Davis and Sacramento, including AT&T, Xfinity, and other regional providers.
- Research reliable services in your area and compare costs.
Water Service
If your rental agreement doesn’t cover water, you will need to ensure this service is in your name so the provider knows who is responsible for paying the bill.
Garbage Services
Your retail agreement may not include garbage services. If you need to set them up in your name, call the provider directly. Both Davis and Sacramento have the capacity to pick up solid waste, recycling, and green waste or composting. Check with your provider to learn how and when those things are picked up.
