Overview
School Eligibility
Children are eligible for free primary and secondary education provided by the local public school district in your city of residence. For the UC Davis campus and UC Davis Med Center, the school districts cover the Davis and Sacramento areas. Please note that in the United States, the term public school means a school funded with tax revenue and administered by a government or governmental agency. Private schools are independent, fee-based schools.

Childcare
If your child is not yet old enough to be eligible for kindergarten or pre-kindergarten ("TK") programs, you may need to find childcare to care for them while you are at work. The Human Resources department has a guide to finding childcare, including information about on and off-campus childcare and Financial Assistance.
Summer Programs
Depending on the school district, school is out around early June through mid to late August. During the summer months, finding childcare for your school-aged children can be challenging. Fortunately, there are many summer programs or "camps" that last from a couple of hours to several hours, like a normal school day.
What to look for in a summer camp:
- Hours of operation
- Cost
- Camp activities that hold your child's interest
- Convenient pick-up and drop-off locations
Summer camp options (not a comprehensive list)
Here are some options for summer programs for children, but please do your own research to find others that might work for your family too. Plan ahead so you sign up in time to secure your spot and contact the organizers for more information or with questions.
