Overview

Before arriving at UC Davis, it is important to determine if you and your family members qualify for health insurance as part of your program or if you will be responsible for obtaining and paying for health insurance for both yourself and your family members. In general, your status at the university is the determining factor.

For International Scholars and Dependents

Whether or not a scholar (and any accompanying family members) has health insurance included in their appointment depends on the appointment itself. In some situations, you will be responsible for obtaining and carrying coverage for you and your dependents.  For more detailed information, please refer to:

For International Students

While you are in the United States, students (both domestic and international) and their dependents can be covered by the University of California's Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP).

For more information about health insurance options, visit Student Health Counseling Services

If Student Health and Wellness Center advises you to seek urgent care or go to the emergency room, you can search for hospitals or other doctors covered by UC SHIP. Here are instructions for how to use the search tool:

  • Select "Guest" to search as a Guest; four boxes will appear, and by Selecting a Plan
  • State: California
  • Type of Plan: Medical (Student Health)
  • Plan/network: UCSHIP PPO
  • Click "Continue"

Please note that you can search with the ID number on your insurance card. There are hospitals and urgent care centers in Davis and the surrounding areas.
